If you’ve ever had your guitar cut out mid-song, chances are you’ve made the same mistake as most guitarists — plugging your lead straight into your guitar jack and letting it hang freely. It might seem like the natural thing to do, but it’s a recipe for disaster.
Whether you’re on stage, at band practice, or just jamming at home, stepping on your cable or even shifting your weight the wrong way can cause the lead to yank out of the jack. Not only does this cut your signal instantly (hello awkward silence), but it can also damage your guitar’s input jack over time.
Thankfully, there’s an incredibly simple fix that takes just two seconds and can save you from gear damage, signal dropouts, and on-stage embarrassment.
The Fix: Thread Your Cable Through the Strap
The next time you plug in your guitar, try this:
- Take the lead and thread it under and through your guitar strap near the bottom strap button.
- Then plug it into your guitar’s input jack as normal.
That’s it.
This small adjustment acts like a built-in cable lock. If your lead gets tugged or stepped on, the tension pulls on your strap — not your guitar jack. That means no sudden signal loss, no cable ripping out mid-song, and no slow damage to your input jack.
It’s one of the most basic setup tricks in the book, but you’d be surprised how many players — even experienced ones — overlook it.
